The Disposability of Black LGBTQ Lives: Giovanni Melton

November 9, 2017 by Angry Black HoeMo

In the wake of several instances of Black Gay/Queer men and boys who losing their lives due to interpersonal and systemic violence, I decided to do a 3-part series going over a couple of particular cases that have stuck out to me, the systemic factors that led to them taking place, and the overall response to them. I’ll start off with one of the most recent cases (as of this piece being written).

[Trigger/Content Warning for anti-LGBTQ violence/murder]

On November 2, 2017, a young Black Gay teen named Giovanni Melton was murdered by his own father. This happened because Giovanni’s father “disagreed” with his sexual identity and couldn’t handle having a Gay son. There are so many layers to this that it’s hard know where to begin. And I don’t believe I’ll even be able to touch on every aspect. But one central takeaway from this whole situation: Black Gay/LGBTQ bodies are undervalued and left behind. Even in this era of so-called “Intersectionality.”

First, I believe that the widespread notion that LGBTQ identities are a simply some idea that be “disagreed” with heavily contributes to this. All of the propaganda in church of “hate the sin, love the sinner.” The posts on social media casually asking baiting questions like “what would you do if this was your son?” The way people relentlessly debase men who do anything that doesn’t fall in line with this colonized idea of masculinity. Making AIDS “jokes” at the expense of Gay/Queer men. All of these things are factors, and all of the people who contribute are complicit. [Read more…]

Stonewall UK and Capitalizing on LGBTQ Oppression

September 19, 2017 by Angry Black HoeMo

That awkward moment when you’re casually browsing Twitter and come across this shit:

Obviously, the irony (and sheer gall) of an organization, literally named after a riot, condemning any and all violence as protest is the first thing that pops out. Even more so, since the incident that sparked their response was Trans women responding in self-defense to anti-Trans activists…much like the very historical event that this organization named itself after. And this was swiftly pointed out by much of Twitter. Myself included:

For the record, if someone wants to spearhead making “Tea & Orgies” a thing, I’m down to help make that into a reality

But I’d like to go a step further and talk about the respectability of these liberal, white-run organizations that claim to center LGBTQ equality and activism. Specifically, how their position can actually make them a hindrance to the very causes they claim to exist for. [Read more…]

Black LGBTQ People Don’t Owe Anyone Our Patience

July 14, 2017 by Angry Black HoeMo

It sometimes feels like many people are more compelled to speak up when it comes time to rationalize bigotry, rather than speaking against the bigotry, itself.

Let’s talk about how, as Black LGBTQ people, we’re expected to make room for, and be “patient” with, violent bigotry. Particularly, in a way that those trying to guilt us virtually never have to.

Despite the fact that WhiteGayze™ have subjected Black folks within the LGBTQ community to dehumanization, theft and erasure for decades, we’re still expected to perform some sort of unity, which only serves to placate their fragility. WhiteGayze™ are never expected to be patient with violent, anti-Gay bigotry towards them (although, they often are…because they’re weak as shit). But somehow, we’re supposed to be OK with their racism. Or, we’re expected to exhibit patience and explain to them why they’re trash “nicely” (i.e. in a way that’s easy to ignore). Funny how that works.

If we’re not getting it from the WhiteGayze™, we’re getting it from Black cishets (and sometimes other Black LGBTQ people, who haven’t yet put down the cishet Kool-Aid). [Read more…]

Pride Colors on Police Cars Do Not Make Them LGBTQ “Allies”

June 23, 2017 by Angry Black HoeMo

I was just browsing Twitter, minding my own business (prolly browsing thirst traps), when I came across this:

…first of all, who’s their graphic designer? These decals are fucking hideous

This is just the latest in an ongoing trend of police departments showing how “down” they are with the Gays.

Keep in mind…Philly’s LGBTQ scene, in particular, has been in the news throughout 2017 pride month

(If you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you likely know what’s coming)

Granted, this really isn’t much unlike any other performative showing of solidarity or “allyship.” But there’s something especially insidious about police adopting this display. Let’s break it down, shall we? [Read more…]

Queerness and Personal Autonomy: Why I’m No Longer Calling Malcolm X Bisexual

February 13, 2017 by Angry Black HoeMo

The topic of Malcolm X’s sexuality is one that comes up every now and again on social media. The most recent resurgence of the topic came about amidst the peak of the magical hashtag #BlackGaySlay. Some tweets came up giving a shout-out to Malcolm X with the hashtag, citing his alleged Bisexuality. Predictably (because this happens every time the topic comes up), this sent the homophobes into a tizzy (example). Initially, I was largely in on going at the bigots about their biphobia and homophobia, asserting Malcolm X’s Queerness. But after spending some time sorting it out in my head, I had to come to realization that that’s kinda bullshit. Here’s why I’m making the personal call to bow out of claiming Malcolm X as Queer or Bisexual…

It’s known that Malcolm X did make a living as a sex worker for male clients in his younger years, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to an actual attraction to men. Regardless of what Malcolm may have done, he never actually said he was Bisexual. One of the more crucial aspects of sexuality and gender identity is having the autonomy to ID oneself as they feel comfortable doing. I think one thing Queer people can, virtually unanimously, agree on is we don’t like having others try to define our sexual identity for us…and it’s something most all of us have had to deal with at some point. So, why would we turn around and define someone else’s sexuality for them—especially when he’s not alive to accept or decline it? It feels a bit hypocritical. [Read more…]
