The Bigots Are Right: The HIV Epidemic Among Black, Gay Men is from Immorality

…but not in the way they’d like to think.

So, at the time of this being published, we’re 2 weeks from National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. I think this is as good of a time as any to finally do a piece tackling the subject of HIV/AIDS among Black men who sleep with men (or MSM in scientific terms). I was motivated to write about this after coming across this documentary on the epidemic levels of HIV among Black, Gay men in Jackson, MS. This started as a thread on Twitter, but I felt this topic was more than due the attention of a full post.

Plus, I just recently passed my 3-year “Poz-aversary” (yes…I just made that up), so I’ll always be heavily invested.

When we talk about the HIV/AIDS epidemic among Gay men, in general, there’s often an air of (homophobia-driven) judgement and condescension, dripping with implications that any of us who contract the virus “deserve it” for our “immoral” behavior. And when you add in the racism of addressing Black, Gay men, that attitude only grows…even from other Gay men.

Now, for argument’s sake, let’s entertain that this idea of HIV being an issue of “immorality” among us, might actually have some merit, and isn’t complete and total bullshit. Even if we wanted to go along with that idea, that perhaps, Black Gay men see higher rates of HIV/AIDS due to “immorality,” well…maybe so…but it’s not immorality on our part. [Read more…]

I Don’t Care What Ellen DeGeneres Has to Say About Kim Burrell

In case you’re unaware, there’s been a lot of talk around the human compost heap that we call Kim Burrell, thanks to a recent “sermon” she gave, laced with homophobia.

And her timing was fascinating, considering she’s apparently supposed to be appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’s show in a few days. So because of that, many people have been expressing their anticipation of what Ellen will have to say in addressing Kim’s homophobic comments. Many essentially want Ellen to drag Kim to hell and back. And, well…first, just so we’re perfectly clear: Kim Burrell is trash…fuck her, fuck her life and fuck this warped version of a “god” that she claims to speak for. Quick Holiday PSA to Black Activists: CHECK YOUR FAM!

The topic came up on Twitter tonight, so thought I’d throw together a quick reminder for y’all. We’ve tasked white “allies” with no longer allowing their family’s casual racism to go unchecked…after all, that kind of silent compliance is what made way for the wide acceptance of Trump. But in turn, we Black folks need to take it upon ourselves to do the same with our own families. While many of y’all will get on social media and talk about how white people silently let their family spew white supremacist rhetoric, a lot of y’all are at currently at home, doing the same with your relatives.

Reminder that 13% of Black men voted for Donald Trump…we can’t erase the fact that his xenophobic messaging resonated among many of us. And I’d wager that his message wasn’t even entirely repulsive to all of the Black folks who voted for Clinton. Also, we can’t pretend like anti-Mexican/Latinx/Asian/Arab/etc rhetoric doesn’t commonly slip from the mouths of our elders…or that we didn’t have to deprogram it within ourselves. Sexual Liberation is Necessary for Black Liberation

I don’t think I’ve made it so much of a secret that I enjoy sex…a lot. I mean, I literally have “Hoe” in my pseudonym. And anyone on following me on Twitter is well-aware of my fondness of all things sex. But yea, in case you’re new to my writing, I absolutely love sex…and this post can serve as an introduction into my views around sexuality as far as it relates to this blog.

For this topic, I think it’s important to discuss how my ability to own my sexuality in an unapologetic way was an important precursor to also owning my Blackness and Queerness in an unapologetic way. Sex-positivity, a concept which originated with feminism, has highly informed much of my attitude around LGBTQ issues and Black issues (and Black LGBTQ issues) and I believe anyone who’s looking to work towards any kind of liberation should take on a more open mindset around all things concerning sexuality. This One Goes Out to the “Respectable Negro”

This one’s been coming for a while.

So, a few days back, Trevor Noah (who I’ve long been a fan of), had white-supremacist-with-piss-poor-hair-stylist Tomi Lahren on his show for an extended interview that many (white) liberals are heralding as a model way for “opposing sides” to “come together.”

…and, while I’m gonna pass on outlining the interview (because frankly, I didn’t watch the whole thing…here’s a thread, though!), I’m just thankful my eyes haven’t gotten stuck from all the rolling they’ve done throughout the entire fallout.

Then, Charlamagne Tha God popped up, as there were apparently plans to have Tomi featured on the Breakfast Club for an interview, which she (“shockingly”) backed out of. Charlamagne still made it a point to reach out and have a sit-down with her, which had the outcome of him declaring that he doesn’t believe she’s a racist, but simply “misinformed.” There was also something about him wanting to ask her if “Black Penises Matter” but…no.
